While playing on CTFW I thought about making the server more noob-friendly. Some suggestions to protect noobs from being kicked:

- Change the start position on all "normal" fortress maps (each team has only one zone). Make the players start outside of the zone. So if someone dies at start, the goalie can set up his def wihtout problems. To me it seems that many players who cant start (noobs?) are polled because the goalie/team gets angry about this.
- A /help option could also solve some problems, e.g. "Grinding means..." or " The goal is to...."

Did I say "some" suggestions? Well, only two I could think of, but whatever.

I take that as a challenge 90% of the time both teams have to face it. it would be easier to defend but too easy. maybe move them up from center to the center of radius to the center.

maybe also a /rules too so every one player is on the same ground since some uses holes and what not. wouldn't be too bad to mod for that too


also what about a general tip for each map at the start like break fast on pentagasm

no........ just do the same like in other servers : in some servers u join as spector and if u want to play u join a team, noobs didnt know that and just leave ... make this at ctwf and evrything is ok
well forum topic is help noobs ok... but this is much better imo they join as sepctor and while they ask how to join they watching usand learn how to play -> grind , def , no inzone turn, ect. well there is a auto kick if u stay blabla minutes as spector . this is another good setting that keep kicken retards who thing: aah nobody wants to help me well ok i just camp in this spot to lock a free place

OK, I changed the map rotation script to print the tactics for the map at the beginning of the round. Just need you to fill out the tactics for the maps that don't have any yet

I was thinking of making a server that had 3 maps rotating. Basically a 1 player fortress practice server.

Map 1: Basic fortress map with bot on your team. You HAVE to grind the bot in order to stay alive and reach the instant win zone. (Death zones would be right in front of you so without turning you would die and the only place you could turn is to grind)

Map 2: Similar, but just 1 player. You start just outside the fortress zone at the upper left corner pointed to the right rim wall. You HAVE to stay outside the zone (a deathzone almost the same size of the fortress is inside so going inside would cause you to die). Also, a big circle (comprised of mini deathzones) a bit outside the actual fortress zone. This will teach someone the basics of how to setup a decent def.

Map 3: Start going straight in a narrow tunnel (not too much cycle_accel). At the end of the "tunnel" is a small gap that you can turn either left or right and hit an instant win zone. If you break too late you will crash into the wall in front of you. If you break too soon you will hit the walls of the tunnel

*Optional Map4*: I've already made this map (kinda) and it's what I use on Local Game when I'm bored and lagging. Its a small arena with a fortress zone in the middle. There are deathzones around it that very slowly get bigger. This helps for compressing and try to capture a zone in a small space. This helps TONS for sumo. If you do it well enough, an instant win zone appears JUST before the deathzones get you.

Problems: Well, my server hasn't been showing up on the master list recently (not DDL...that's hosted by the steam team). I have ports 4530-4545 forwarded and firewall and norton anti virus off, but it doesn't help it. I don't want to take DDL down for a 1 person server. Maybe ed (via wrtl) could host this type of server. Only 1 slot really needed (unless you can get creative and after a certain amount of time "survivng" an instant win zone can appear and someone could actually win the round.

Until (if?) we get some kind of control over the bots, I can't see a way to make a decent training server.
Yes, you can make good practice maps, like those you suggested, but this wont help new players learn the basics, which is what is needed.
For example, your first map:


The bot is stupid, and is more likely to kill the trainee or drive into a deathzone than he is to obediently drive straight up towards the winzone. Niether of which will help the new dude.

Another problem I see is, that many players just dont like to play on a server without any other players.
If we have bot control, you could just implement a practise mode in the game itself.

Ok instead of a bot going striaght how about a skinny wall?
