Hi there,
next Thursday I am going to write an english exam, subject "analysis of a short story".
That's why I wondered if you guys (especially those of you who come from GB) knoww some short stories written by Ernest Hemingway, this day we analysed his story "A Day's Wait" and that's why I think that I will get a short story of him.
Also it's possible that one of the excercises is to write a formal letter to one of the characters.
My question is: How to write a formal letter? ^^
I would be very happy if many of you would like to help me
Thx, Dready |

formal letter:
address of the person who is writing the letter - in the top left corner
name and address of the person you send the letter to - in the top left corner below the address of the sender, e.g.:
Mr J.A. Arnolds
10 Cranmer Terrace
London
SW17 ORB
UK (or Great Britain or England)
date - under the address of the addressee, e.g.:
6 July, 2003
6th July, 2003
July 6, 2003
July 6th, 2003
dates are not abbreviated in a formal letter.
no full stop after the date.
opening formula (salutation) - e.g.:
Dear Sirs, (when writing to a business, a company or a firm)
Dear Mr Taylor,
Dear Miss Haynes, (Miss is used in front of the surname of a woman or girl who is not married or who is niet using her husband's surname)
Dear Ms Walters, (Ms is used if you do not want to specify whether the woman is married or not, so it is the counterpart of Mr)
Dear Dr Lions,
Dear Sir/Madam,
no full stop after Mr, Mrs, Ms or Dr.
if you know the name of the addressee, use it in the opening formula.
if the addressee has a title, use it and use a capital:
Dear Professor Smith,
Dear Captain Summers,
closing formula (valediction) - e.g.:
Yours faithfully, (is used when the salutation does not contain a name)
Yours sincerely, (is used when the salutation contains a name)
always a comma after the closing formula.
---
very often the signature (accompanied by the name of the writer written in block letters and in brackets) is put at the bottom of the letter, on the left. |
